boats on the dock why dont people just steal them?

i don't understand why dont people just go and take it for parts…they just leave it there i mean the engine and other stuff exposed..

We have a boat landing with many camps that leave their boat and motors at their camp when they are not there.. There is from 3-5 boat motors stolen every year from the camps. I can only assume that this would be the norm all over the states, due to the drug problems in the nation.

Sometimes they do. But if they got stolen, and reported, where would you take them? The have to be in the coast somewhere.

Boaters always look out for each other and it is very difficult to get away with that stuff without someone seeing it being done. A stranger on a boat will be spotted quickly.

The real answer to that is the fact that "boaters" are honest people. So, we don't worry about each other… we only have to look out for the strangers… and they are easy to spot.

So… to prove my point, why don't you try it some time? And then let us know how far you get… it won't be far, I can assure you.
I know at my Marina - (and at every Marina I have ever kept any of my boats) we all watch out for each other… Boaters just have a way of looking out after everyone's boats. It is very unlikely that any stranger walking around near the boats on or at the dock, or any strange boat that cruises into the boat slip area… is not being watched by at least a dozen or more pair of eye balls… maybe even a pair or two of binoculars (that's what I use)… And all this time - what? You thought we were looking at the girls?…
Besides… its not just "the eyes of boaters R upon U" its the cameras… they are everywhere man - everywhere! At my Marina, they have a cameras view on every single vessel in the marina, as well as the exterior (over land) perimeter, and the inland (over water) docks, walkways, entrances, exits… and of course all entrance, exit and perimeters and inside all shops, stores work and storage areas.
If you ever thought that "Uncle Sam" was watching you … you haven't seen nothing tell you see Uncle Sam at a marina. We now even have 2 full-time "Homeland Security Gurads" that patrol our marina 24/7 (as well as all the rest of 'em in the Port of Galveston area). There job description ? (I know because I ask 'em) is simply to watch for unfamilar people and boats… Course, our Marina (and the rest of us) just love having 'em around…

boats are not as easy to work on or remove parts as you would think, it takes some time, everything has lock nuts, sealer or 5200, as for engine stuff i woudl think people would notice you walking on with tools and walking off with parts , not too mention al the cameras around marina's, people are paying good money to keep their boat in the water, and also like everyone said- boaters look out for one another and most of the time no whos' boat is whos'. you would stand a better chance of stealing the entire boat and stripping it somewhere else. the only problem with that is like i said before most marinas and boat ramps have camera, (well atleats down here in south florida), so even if you got the boat would be difficult to work with.

Unlike cars Boat roads are narrow and not very many, then were are you going to go, then What are you going to do with it when you get their, unless someone takes time to Pre place a trailer, have it adjustable enough to accommodate any Boat , then Manage to sneak away, just to go to jail because they will be caught and Probably wind up on Worlds Dumbest Video,s

We had two boats stolen just last week. Kids took them out on the water for a joy-ride.

Hopefully there is always somebody in the marina to watch the boats. A harbormaster, or other boat owner's presence deters the thieves.

Maybe because if they get caught and the part that the person stole is over $20 Then the person who owns it can sue them and they could go to Jail but sometimes people steal but it depends on how smart they are!!??
